Bill Ruckelshaus and Martha Kongsgaard made a strong case that wilderness designation for certain critical lands around Puget Sound is an important and necessary step to safeguard the health of the Sound (Viewpoint, 9-26). I absolutely agree. When we safeguard Puget Sound, we safeguard the environmental and economic health of our region.
Wilderness and wild and scenic designations for portions of the Olympic Peninsula will keep forests healthy and waters clean.
This solution makes sense today and for the long term. It's important to act now. We have learned the hard way that when it comes to our environment, an ounce of prevention is worth many pounds of cure. This plan will keep the Olympic Peninsula wild and allow the Sound to thrive. Congress should act this year on this common-sense conservation legislation.
