They say it is never too late to show your appreciation by saying “thank you” so here is my thanks to the Hoquiam city council members and Mayor Jack Durney for the position they took on June 25 concerning Dicks’ and Murray’s Wild Olympics bill. The bill’s intent is to add more protections to some Olympic lands and rivers by adding additional wilderness to Olympic National Forest and designating federal and state portions of some of our rivers as “Wild and Scenic.” Both will go a long way to protecting our community water supply for future generations.

I believe that all of us who live on the peninsula want what is best for our wild rivers and ancient forests, and we are all proud of this wonderful land that we share. I am proud, too, that the leaders of Hoquiam have chosen to be reasonable as the issue is being considered.

There have been several Wild Olympics meetings around the Harbor, some so contentious that no rational result could occur. Fortunately, most people value our ability to talk with each other civilly and in a manner that can result in decisions that are fair to all. Thank you, Mayor Durney and each member of the city council, for your reasoned decision. And thank you Congressman Dicks and Senator Murray for your leadership and work to find consensus on the issue.
