Wild Olympics Coalition Backs Revised Watershed Protection Proposal

(Quilcene, WA) The Wild Olympics Campaign today acknowledged disappointment with the decision by Congressman Norm Dicks and Senator Patty Murray to drop the willing-seller National Preserve addition piece of their proposal, but said they understand and accept the change. The Coalition stated they continue to enthusiastically back the modified Congressional plan which retains Olympic National Forest wilderness additions and new Wild and Scenic River designations for the Peninsula.

Concession made in Wild Olympics wilderness plan

PORT ANGELES - In a major concession to the forest industry, the Wild Olympics Campaign is accepting the elimination of a "willing-buyer, willing-seller" provision of a land and scenic preservation plan - originally generated by the group - that would have allowed privately owned land to be absorbed into Olympic National Park, group organizer Connie Gallant of Quilcene said.

A great opportunity for both sides

Don't miss your opportunity to attend the meeting on the Wild Olympics issue. It's from 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, May 10 at the Bishop Center at Grays Harbor College. We will all have an opportunity to hear from those for and those against Wild Olympics. I am very thankful to the people that have put this meeting together. Pro or Con. This is a great opportunity for people to voice their concerns in an organized open format regarding the Congressional Olympic Watersheds Protection Proposal for the Olympics.

Keep the Olympics Wild

I'm another local supporter of the Wild Olympics and was happy to see the recent Q&A column from former County Commissioner Al Carter. I thought Al did a great job of setting the record straight on the Wild Olympics, showing that we can both protect our rivers and forests and protect jobs.

Quilcene, WA – The Wild Olympics Campaign, a Quilcene-based coalition of conservation and recreation groups welcomed the findings in a new report from Headwaters Economics. The Campaign commissioned the study to examine the broader economy of the entire Olympic Peninsula and potential effects of the draft watershed conservation plan issued by Congressman Dicks and Senator Murray in November of 2011.

Statement of Wild Olympics Campaign on New Timber Analysis of Draft ONF Wilderness/Wild and Scenic River Proposal

“We welcome the independent timber analysis by forester Derek Churchill of Stewardship Forestry Consulting, which indicates the draft Wilderness/Wild and Scenic River proposal will not have any significant impact on the Olympic National Forest (ONF) timber supply. The Wild Olympics Campaign commissioned the timber analysis to help inform the public discussion about land management and conservation for parts of the Olympic National Forest."

“Mr. Churchill’s analysis indicates the wilderness proposal’s effect on the Olympic National Forest timber base is so small, that even at an accelerated harvest rate, the acreage left available would keep the Forest Service busy for more than half a century without any interruption whatsoever to the timber supply."

Protecting our forests and rivers

I recently heard about the Wild Olympics Campaign and the proposal to protect the Olympic Peninsula's ancient forests and wild rivers. As a resident of Kitsap, a peninsula bordered on one side by Puget Sound and the other by Hood Canal, I couldn't be happier that Congressman Norm Dicks and Sen. Patty Murray are moving forward with a watershed protection package for the Olympic Peninsula.

Olympic Peninsula forests, rivers need protection

My family started oyster and shellfish farming here more than 100 years ago. Today I am proud to carry on this family business with my brother. The two of us hope it will thrive for another 100 years and beyond. A healthy Puget Sound is the linchpin to that dream, and we cannot have a healthy Puget Sound without protecting and restoring the watersheds that drain in to it.
